SOUND CURRENTS SERIES LAUNCHED The Holy Trinity Music & Arts Series is pleased to present the first concert in the new Sound Currents series, featuring new compositions by Ben Houge, Mike Min, Geoff Ogle, and Korby Sears. Performers include the acclaimed Odeon String Quartet, serving this year as Lehmann Ensemble-in-Residence at Cornish College of the Arts; bassoonist Ryan Hare; clarinetists Florie Rothenberg and Andrea Smardon; and the premiere performance of the new composers collective Seattle School. The eclectic program underscores the range of creative work happening in Seattle. Ben Houge, Holy Trinity's composer-in-residence, will present Music from Arcanum, a meditative suite for string quartet that belies its origins as the soundtrack for a computer game. Mike Min, also active in the realm of music for interactive media, will premiere Folding, a new improvisatory work for voice and real-time electronics. Geoff Ogle, a composer and music educator perhaps best known for his jazz compositions, will unveil his String Quartet No. 1. Korby Sears, who has been active as a jazz and classical bassist and keyboardist, will present a new arrangement of his work Water for Pistons, inspired by the urban legend of the water engine. Through this concert, the composers are seeking to reach out to the community by interacting with audience members before and after the concert to explain the impetus behind their music. In addition, the composers have planned a presentation at Mercer Island High School on February 24 to teach students about possibilities for music and composition in their lives and careers. As a further outreach to audience members, program notes and additional information are available on the Sound Currents web page: www.soundcurrents.org. Look for the second Sound Currents concert this fall. Sound Currents is co-sponsored by the Washington Composers Forum and the Seattle Composers Alliance and supported by a generous grant from Meet the Composer. Funding from Meet the Composer, Inc. is provided with the support of the National Endowment for the Arts, ASCAP, and the Virgil Thomson Foundation. Now in its second season, the Holy Trinity Music & Arts Series has brought a fantastic array of music to Mercer Island since its inception. The remainder of this season features performances by the Medieval Women's Choir, Bells of the Sound, and Holy Trinity's Cantorei Choir. For more information please visit www.htlcmi.org/musicarts. |
