About Sound Currents

Sound Currents is a concert-producing entity dedicated to presenting fresh, new, creative music in Shanghai. Just as the best dishes are made from the freshest local ingredients, it’s always satisfying to experience new art that reflects the same environment in which you live. To that end, Sound Currents seeks to foster a scene for inventive, invigorating, exploratory, and experimental music in Shanghai, to introduce creative musicians from abroad to Shanghai audiences, and to support the creativity of local musicians. Sound Currents presents an eclectic mix of new expressions, rooted in the belief that musical partisanship is a vestige of the last century.

The Sound Currents concert series was initially founded in Seattle, WA, USA, by Ben Houge and co-produced in close collaboration with Korby Sears, Mike Min, and Geoff Ogle. After about 2 years of planning, Sound Currents 1 took place in February 2003, followed by Sound Currents 2 in November of the same year. In addition to inspiring local composers to work with musicians to bring new pieces to the public, Sound Currents presented the first performance by the Seattle School composers collective, which continues to thrill and confound Seattle audiences with projects such as the Iron Composer songwriting competition/drinking game/aural obstacle course.

The original Sound Currents series received great notice in the press. For full information about previous shows, check out the Sound Currents archive.

At a time when the eyes of the world are on Shanghai, Sound Currents promotes this unique city's musical present while celebrating its heritage and contributing towards its future.
